Corner Door Systems

Open Corner & Postless Glazing

Aluminium corner door systems delivering open, postless corner glazing for architectural homes and commercial projects where unobstructed views and indoor-outdoor connection are the primary design intent.

Corner door systems are among the most architecturally distinctive glazing solutions available — eliminating the structural post at a building corner and allowing panels to slide or fold away to create a fully open connection between interior and exterior spaces at the corner of a building. The absence of a corner post maximises views, dissolves the boundary between inside and outside, and creates a spatial quality that no other door system can replicate. Corner door systems require careful structural coordination to transfer loads that would ordinarily be carried by the corner post, making early engagement between architect, structural engineer and glazing supplier essential. Hunter Windows supplies and installs corner door systems from the AWS Elevate range for architectural and commercial projects where this level of design intent is a priority.

Typical Applications

Corner door systems are commonly specified across:

  • Architect-designed homes where corner views and indoor-outdoor connection are central to the design
  • High-end residential renovations opening up existing corner conditions
  • Hospitality venues and restaurants with feature corner aspects
  • Commercial spaces where a corner location is a design and marketing asset
  • Penthouse and upper-level apartments with corner outlooks
  • Retail showrooms and display spaces requiring unobstructed corner glazing

Key Performance Considerations

Corner door systems introduce structural and coordination requirements beyond standard door specification:

  • Structural corner transfer — the absence of a corner post requires the building structure to transfer loads via a corner beam or cantilevered structural element; early engagement with the structural engineer is essential to ensure the structural system supports the glazing design
  • Panel configuration — corner systems typically combine two runs of sliding or folding panels meeting at the corner; panel count, leaf width and opening direction on each run should be determined early
  • Weather resistance — the corner junction between two panel runs requires specific sealing and drainage detailing; series selection and installation methodology should be confirmed with Hunter Windows early in the design process
  • Thermal performance — U-value and SHGC ratings vary across series; corner glazing increases total glazed area significantly and should be considered within the whole-of-facade energy model
  • Sightline at corner — the corner post elimination produces a minimal sightline at the corner junction when closed; the specific corner detail varies by system and affects the visual outcome when panels are in the closed position
  • Hardware and operation — panel operation at the corner requires specific hardware coordination; the sequence in which panels open and close should be considered during design
  • Lead times — corner door systems are bespoke configurations requiring specific fabrication; early engagement with Hunter Windows supports programme planning

Energy Performance & Thermal Ratings

Corner door systems are WERS rated where applicable, providing verified U-value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) data for use in NCC energy compliance calculations and thermal modelling.

Key energy performance factors for specification:

  • U-value — measures the rate of heat transfer through the door assembly; corner glazing increases total glazed area and thermal bridging considerations at the corner junction
  • SHGC — corner glazing typically faces two orientations simultaneously; SHGC selection should be informed by both orientations and coordinated with the project’s energy model and shading strategy
  • Glazing selection — double glazing, low-e coatings and laminated options are available across the range; glass selection should reflect the combined thermal and solar exposure of the corner condition
  • ThermalHEART series — thermally broken frames are particularly relevant for corner applications where the increased glazed area amplifies the impact of frame thermal performance on overall building energy outcomes

SHGC and U-value ranges for each series are shown in the Available Range section above. For detailed energy performance data and climate zone guidance, see our WERS & Energy Performance and Thermally Broken Frames resource pages.

Integration

Corner door systems integrate across facade, sector and specification decisions:

  • Facade Solutions — represent a specialised application within high-rise and commercial framing contexts; structural coordination requirements make early facade consultant engagement particularly important for multi-storey corner glazing applications
  • Sectors — most commonly specified in architectural homes where corner views and spatial quality are design priorities; also applicable in high-end retail and hospitality environments and upper-level multi-residential apartments with corner outlooks
  • Specification — glass selection, colour finishes and hardware are all configurable; the corner junction detail and panel operation sequence should be confirmed with Hunter Windows early; refer to the Specification section for detail on available options
