Sliding Door Systems

Large Opening & Space-Efficient Operation

Aluminium sliding door systems delivering large panel capacity, smooth operation and weather performance for commercial, multi-residential and architectural projects.

Sliding door systems are among the most widely specified door types across commercial and residential construction. Panels slide horizontally within the frame rather than swinging outward, making them well suited to locations where swing clearance is limited — balconies, courtyards, tight internal layouts and facades where outward projection is not practical. Their ability to accommodate large panel widths while maintaining a relatively slim frame profile makes them a common choice across multi-residential, commercial and architectural home applications. Hunter Windows supplies and installs sliding door systems from the AWS Elevate range, available across multiple series configurations to suit panel size, performance requirements and project scale.

Typical Applications

Sliding door systems are commonly specified across:

  • Multi-residential apartments and balcony access points
  • Commercial office and mixed-use developments
  • Aged care facilities where ease of operation is a priority
  • Architect-designed homes with indoor-outdoor living connections
  • Retail and hospitality frontages
  • Education and public buildings requiring accessible entry points
  • Facades where outward swing clearance is not available

Key Performance Considerations

System selection should account for:

  • Panel size and weight — sliding door systems can accommodate large panel widths and heights; series selection determines maximum dimensions, glass thickness capacity and structural performance
  • Weather resistance — tested water penetration and air infiltration performance varies by series; exposure conditions, building height and threshold design all influence appropriate series selection
  • Acoustic performance — glazing selection and frame depth affect acoustic outcomes; relevant to apartment, aged care and commercial applications adjacent to noise sources
  • Thermal performance — U-value and SHGC ratings vary across series; the ThermalHEART series provides thermally broken frames for projects with elevated NCC energy requirements
  • Hardware and operation — roller quality and track design directly affect long-term ease of operation and durability; heavy-duty hardware options are available for large panel weights and high-traffic applications
  • Threshold design — low-profile and flush threshold options improve accessibility and reduce trip hazard risk; threshold selection affects both structural connection and finished floor level relationship
  • Security — multipoint locking and security screen integration options should reflect project security requirements and relevant Australian Standards
  • BAL rating compliance — selected series carry BAL certification for bushfire-prone area applications

Energy Performance & Thermal Ratings

Sliding door systems are WERS rated, providing verified U-value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) data for use in NCC energy compliance calculations and thermal modelling.

Key energy performance factors for specification:

  • U-value — measures the rate of heat transfer through the door assembly; lower values indicate better thermal insulation across large glazed panel widths
  • SHGC — measures solar heat gain through the glazing; particularly relevant for large sliding door openings on north and west-facing facades where solar exposure is significant
  • Glazing selection — performance outcomes vary significantly with glass type; double glazing, low-e coatings and laminated options are available across the range
  • ThermalHEART series — thermally broken aluminium frames reduce heat transfer at the frame, improving overall system U-values for projects with elevated energy performance requirements

SHGC and U-value ranges for each series are shown in the Available Range section above. For detailed energy performance data and climate zone guidance, see our WERS & Energy Performance and Thermally Broken Frames resource pages.

Integration

Sliding door systems integrate across facade, sector and specification decisions:

  • Facade Solutions — commonly used within window wall and commercial framing assemblies; suited to repetitive facade bays requiring consistent large-format glazed door openings across multiple levels
  • Sectors — applicable across multi-residential, aged care, retail and architectural homes projects, each with distinct operational, accessibility and performance requirements
  • Specification — glass selection, colour finishes, hardware and threshold options are all configurable; refer to the Specification section for detail on available options
