Stacking Door Systems

Wide Span Opening & Panel Stacking

Aluminium stacking door systems delivering wide opening spans and clean sightlines for architectural, hospitality and commercial applications.

Stacking door systems occupy a distinct position between sliding and bi-fold systems — panels slide horizontally and stack behind a fixed panel or into a wall pocket, providing a wider clear opening than a standard sliding door without the folding mechanism of a bi-fold system. This makes stacking doors well suited to applications where a wide, unobstructed opening is desired but the ceiling or structural conditions don’t support a top-hung bi-fold track, or where a cleaner, more linear aesthetic is preferred over the folded panel stack of a bi-fold system. Hunter Windows supplies and installs stacking door systems from the AWS Elevate range, available in configurations to suit opening width, panel count and performance requirements.

Stacking Sliding Door

Typical Applications

Stacking door systems are commonly specified across:

  • Architect-designed homes with wide indoor-outdoor living connections
  • Hospitality venues and restaurants requiring wide open frontages
  • Commercial and retail spaces with flexible open facades
  • Multi-residential common areas and amenity spaces
  • Entertainment and function spaces with wide opening requirements
  • Applications where bi-fold ceiling track is structurally or aesthetically unsuitable
  • Wall pocket applications where panels stack fully out of sight when open

Key Performance Considerations

System selection should account for:

  • Opening width and panel count — stacking systems can accommodate multiple panels across wide openings; panel count and stacking direction should be determined early in the design process
  • Panel size and weight — individual panel dimensions and glass weight affect roller and track performance; maximum panel sizes vary by series
  • Wall pocket requirements — where panels are required to stack fully out of sight, wall pocket dimensions must be coordinated with the structural and architectural design; early confirmation of pocket width and depth is essential
  • Weather resistance — stacking systems in exposed locations require careful consideration of panel sealing, track design and threshold detailing; series selection should reflect exposure conditions
  • Thermal performance — U-value and SHGC ratings vary across series; large stacking door openings have a proportionally significant impact on building energy performance
  • Hardware and operation — roller and track quality directly affect ease of operation across multiple panels; heavy-duty hardware options are available for larger panel weights
  • Threshold design — low-profile and flush threshold options improve accessibility and reduce trip hazard risk; threshold selection affects structural connection and finished floor level relationship
  • Security — locking configuration across multiple sliding panels requires careful consideration; series selection should reflect project security requirements

Energy Performance & Thermal Ratings

Stacking door systems are WERS rated, providing verified U-value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) data for use in NCC energy compliance calculations and thermal modelling.

Key energy performance factors for specification:

  • U-value — measures the rate of heat transfer through the door assembly; lower values indicate better thermal insulation across wide glazed opening spans
  • SHGC — measures solar heat gain through the glazing; particularly relevant for wide stacking door openings on north and west-facing facades where solar exposure across a large glazed area is significant
  • Glazing selection — performance outcomes vary significantly with glass type; double glazing, low-e coatings and laminated options are available across the range
  • ThermalHEART series — thermally broken aluminium frames reduce heat transfer at the frame, improving overall system U-values for projects with elevated energy performance requirements

SHGC and U-value ranges for each series are shown in the Available Range section above. For detailed energy performance data and climate zone guidance, see our WERS & Energy Performance and Thermally Broken Frames resource pages.

Integration

Stacking door systems integrate across facade, sector and specification decisions:

  • Facade Solutions — commonly used within commercial framing and shop front assemblies where wide opening spans are required; an alternative to bi-fold systems where overhead track or folding panel aesthetics are not preferred
  • Sectors — most commonly specified in architectural homes and retail and hospitality environments; also applicable in multi-residential common areas where wide opening spans and clean sightlines are design priorities
  • Specification — glass selection, colour finishes, hardware and threshold options are all configurable; wall pocket requirements should be confirmed early with the structural and architectural team; refer to the Specification section for detail on available options
