Large-format and bespoke glazing represents the upper end of the architectural window specification — projects where standard configurations are insufficient and the glazing itself becomes a defining element of the building’s design. This includes oversized fixed or operable panels, non-rectangular geometries, custom frame profiles, and complex multi-panel assemblies that require early engineering coordination between architect, builder and glazing supplier. Key Performance Considerations

Large-format and bespoke applications introduce engineering and coordination requirements beyond standard window specification:

  • Structural performance — oversized panels experience significantly higher wind loads and dead loads than standard panels; frame depth, mullion sizing and fixing details must be engineered to suit panel dimensions and building exposure
  • Glazing specification — large glass panels require careful selection of glass type, thickness and interlayer to manage deflection, thermal stress and safety requirements; laminated and toughened safety glass is typically required
  • Thermal performance — large glazed areas have a proportionally greater impact on building energy performance than standard windows; U-value and SHGC selection should be informed by energy modelling at the whole-of-facade level
  • Weather resistance — joint design, sealant detailing and drainage paths become more critical at large panel scales; early coordination between the glazing supplier and facade engineer is recommended
  • Complex geometries — raked, angled and non-rectangular frames require custom fabrication and specific installation sequencing; tolerances are tighter and coordination with the structural frame is essential

Energy Performance & Thermal Ratings

Large-format glazing has a proportionally greater influence on building energy performance than standard window systems. Glazing specification and system selection should be informed by whole-of-facade energy modelling rather than individual window U-value alone.

Key energy performance factors for specification:

  • U-value — measures the rate of heat transfer through the glazing assembly; for large glazed areas, even small improvements in U-value have a significant impact on overall building energy performance
  • SHGC — solar heat gain through large glazed areas can be substantial; SHGC selection should be informed by orientation, shading strategy and climate zone, and coordinated with the project’s energy model
  • Glazing selection — double glazing, low-e coatings, laminated interlayers and high-performance glass types are available and should be selected to meet both performance and safety requirements for the specific application
  • ThermalHEART series — thermally broken frames are particularly relevant for large-format applications where frame-to-glass ratio is lower and overall system U-value is more directly influenced by glass performance
