Fixed & Raked Glazing

Non-Operable Glazing & Feature Facades

Fixed and raked aluminium glazing systems for feature facades, highlights, skylights and architectural applications where light, framing and visual connection are the primary design drivers.

Fixed and raked glazing systems are specified where ventilation is not required and the design intent is centred on light penetration, view framing, or facade continuity. Their non-operable nature allows for larger, uninterrupted glass areas and cleaner sightlines than operable systems, making them a common choice for feature walls, highlight windows above operable systems, raked ceiling applications and curtain wall infill panels. Hunter Windows supplies and installs fixed and raked glazing systems from the AWS Elevate range, configured to suit project scale, glazing size and performance requirements.

Typical Applications

Fixed and raked glazing systems are commonly specified across:

  • Feature facade panels and curtain wall infill
  • Highlight windows above operable window systems
  • Raked and angled ceiling glazing applications
  • Skylights and roof glazing
  • Stairwells, atriums and double-height spaces
  • Architect-designed homes with large fixed glazed openings
  • Commercial lobbies and public-facing facades

Key Performance Considerations

System selection should account for:

  • Glazing size and structural performance — fixed systems can accommodate larger glass panels than operable systems; frame depth and mullion sizing must be appropriate for panel dimensions and wind loading
  • Weather resistance — non-operable frames eliminate the performance variables of operable hardware, but joint design and sealant detailing remain critical for weather exclusion
  • Thermal performance — U-value and SHGC are directly influenced by glass selection; fixed systems offer greater flexibility in glazing specification given the absence of operable hardware constraints
  • Acoustic performance — fixed glazing with appropriate glass specification can achieve higher acoustic ratings than operable systems; relevant to apartment, education and commercial applications adjacent to noise sources
  • Raked and angled applications — non-standard angles require specific frame and drainage detailing; early engagement with the Hunter Windows team is recommended for complex geometries
  • Glazing capacity — maximum glass thickness and panel dimensions vary by system; laminated, double glazed and high-performance glass options are available
  • Safety glazing — overhead and low-level fixed glazing applications typically require laminated or toughened safety glass in accordance with Australian Standards

Energy Performance & Thermal Ratings

Fixed and raked glazing systems are WERS rated where applicable, with U-value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) data available for use in NCC energy compliance calculations and thermal modelling.

Key energy performance factors for specification:

  • U-value — measures the rate of heat transfer through the glazing assembly; fixed systems without operable hardware typically achieve lower U-values than equivalent operable systems
  • SHGC — measures solar heat gain through the glazing; orientation, shading and climate zone all influence appropriate SHGC selection, particularly for large fixed glazed areas
  • Glazing selection — fixed systems accommodate a wider range of glass thicknesses and types than operable systems; double glazing, laminated, low-e and acoustic glass options are available
  • Raked and overhead applications — thermal and condensation performance requires careful consideration in raked and overhead glazing; glazing specification should account for orientation and internal environment conditions

For detailed energy performance data and climate zone guidance, see our WERS & Energy Performance and Thermally Broken Frames resource pages.

Integration

Fixed and raked glazing integrates across facade, sector and specification decisions:

  • Facade Solutions — a core component of curtain wall and window wall assemblies; commonly combined with operable awning, casement or sliding systems to create mixed-operability facades across high-rise applications
  • Sectors — applicable across multi-residential, education, retail and architectural homes projects where feature glazing, daylighting or facade continuity are design priorities
  • Specification — glass selection is the primary specification decision for fixed systems; refer to the Glass Options page for detail on available glazing types, and Colour Finishes for frame finish options
