Bi-Fold Door Systems

Full-Width Opening & Indoor-Outdoor Connection

Aluminium bi-fold door systems delivering full-width opening capability and seamless indoor-outdoor connection for architectural, hospitality and commercial applications.

Bi-fold door systems are specified where the full width of a glazed opening needs to be cleared — panels fold and stack to one or both sides, creating an unobstructed connection between interior and exterior spaces. This makes bi-fold doors a defining feature in architect-designed homes, hospitality venues, and commercial spaces where flexible opening of large glazed facades is central to the design intent. Unlike sliding doors which leave a portion of the opening occupied by panels at all times, bi-fold systems can open the entire width of the frame when fully folded. Hunter Windows supplies and installs bi-fold door systems from the AWS Elevate range, available in configurations to suit opening width, panel count, threshold requirements and performance specification.

Typical Applications

Bi-fold door systems are commonly specified across:

  • Architect-designed homes with alfresco and indoor-outdoor living connections
  • Hospitality venues, restaurants and cafes with open frontages
  • Commercial and retail spaces requiring flexible open facades
  • Multi-residential common areas and amenity spaces
  • Entertainment and function spaces
  • Aged care facilities where indoor-outdoor connection supports amenity
  • Education buildings with operable indoor-outdoor learning spaces

Key Performance Considerations

System selection should account for:

  • Opening width and panel count — bi-fold systems accommodate multiple panels across large openings; panel count, leaf width and stacking configuration (one side or both) should be determined early in the design process
  • Panel size and weight — individual panel dimensions and glass weight affect hardware loading, ease of operation and long-term durability; maximum panel sizes vary by series
  • Weather resistance — bi-fold systems in exposed locations require careful consideration of threshold design, panel sealing and weather resistance ratings; series selection should reflect exposure conditions
  • Thermal performance — U-value and SHGC ratings vary across series; large bi-fold openings have a proportionally significant impact on building energy performance and should be considered within the whole-of-facade energy model
  • Hardware and operation — top-hung systems reduce floor track obstruction and improve accessibility; folding hardware quality directly affects long-term ease of operation and durability
  • Threshold design — low-profile and flush threshold options improve accessibility and reduce trip hazard risk, particularly in hospitality and public-facing applications; threshold selection affects structural connection and finished floor level relationship
  • Security — multipoint locking across multiple folding panels requires careful consideration; series selection should reflect project security requirements
  • BAL rating compliance — selected series carry BAL certification for bushfire-prone area applications

Energy Performance & Thermal Ratings

Bi-fold door systems are WERS rated, providing verified U-value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) data for use in NCC energy compliance calculations and thermal modelling.

Key energy performance factors for specification:

  • U-value — measures the rate of heat transfer through the door assembly; lower values indicate better thermal insulation across large glazed opening widths
  • SHGC — measures solar heat gain through the glazing; particularly relevant for large bi-fold openings on north and west-facing facades where solar exposure is significant
  • Glazing selection — performance outcomes vary significantly with glass type; double glazing, low-e coatings and laminated options are available across the range
  • ThermalHEART series — thermally broken aluminium frames reduce heat transfer at the frame, improving overall system U-values for projects with elevated energy performance requirements

SHGC and U-value ranges for each series are shown in the Available Range section above. For detailed energy performance data and climate zone guidance, see our WERS & Energy Performance and Thermally Broken Frames resource pages.

Integration

Bi-fold door systems integrate across facade, sector and specification decisions:

  • Facade Solutions — commonly used within commercial framing and shop front assemblies; suited to applications requiring full-width opening of glazed facades in hospitality, retail and commercial environments
  • Sectors — most commonly specified in architectural homes and retail and hospitality environments; also applicable in aged care and education projects where indoor-outdoor connection is a design priority
  • Specification — glass selection, colour finishes, hardware and threshold options are all configurable; panel count and stacking arrangement should be confirmed early; refer to the Specification section for detail on available options
